Apple Intelligence iPhone: Full Compatibility & Setup
Is Your iPhone Ready for Apple Intelligence? The Complete Compatibility Guide for 2026
Apple Intelligence promises smarter Siri, writing tools, and image generation directly on your iPhone—but it only works on certain models. This guide shows you exactly how to check if your iPhone qualifies and how to enable it in just 4 steps.
What is Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is a personal intelligence system built directly into your iPhone that uses on-device AI to understand and act on your information—all while keeping your data private. Unlike cloud-based AI services that send your information to distant servers, Apple Intelligence processes information locally on your device, meaning your personal details never leave your phone.
Current as of May 2026, Apple Intelligence powers features like improved voice commands for Siri, smarter writing tools that rewrite or proofread your messages, image generation through Image Playground, intelligent photo search, and automatic summarization of emails and notifications. The system uses your device’s neural engine (a specialized AI processor) rather than relying on the cloud, giving you faster responses and stronger privacy protection.
Why Use Apple Intelligence?
- Privacy-first AI: Your personal information stays on your device instead of being sent to cloud servers. Apple can’t access your conversations, photos, or documents.
- Faster responses: Processing happens locally, so Siri replies instantly without internet lag.
- Smarter writing assistance: Proofread emails before sending, rewrite paragraphs in different tones (professional, friendly, concise), and get help organizing your thoughts in Notes.
- Better photo organization: Search your entire photo library by what’s actually in images (“photos of my dog at the park”) rather than just dates and locations.
Important Things to Know Before Enabling
- Storage requirement is higher than you might think: Apple Intelligence requires 7GB of free storage space on your device (increased from the original 4GB requirement when features like Image Playground were added in iOS 18.2). Deleting apps, old photos, or videos may be necessary.
- Battery life will decrease measurably: Enabling Apple Intelligence reduces your usable battery life by approximately 1 hour 22 minutes on average. This happens because the on-device AI runs background tasks to index your information and analyzes audio. If all-day battery life is critical for you, carefully weigh this tradeoff.
- Geographic availability varies: Apple Intelligence is available in 15 languages and most regions as of May 2026 (including EU, UK, and others). However, it is not officially available in mainland China, even though an unauthorized rollout was reported in March 2026. If you’re in mainland China or have your Apple account set to that region, you won’t see Apple Intelligence in Settings.
- Some features need internet: While basic Siri voice commands and text proofreading work offline, image generation, advanced document rewriting, ChatGPT integration, and smart notification filtering require an active internet connection.
How to Check Compatibility & Enable Apple Intelligence—Step by Step
Step 1: Verify Your iPhone Model
Open Settings > General > About and look for the ‘Model’ field. You’ll see text like “iPhone 15 Pro,” “iPhone 15 Pro Max,” or one of the iPhone 16 models (iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max).
If your model is:
- iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max → ✓ Compatible
- iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max → ✓ Compatible
- iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, or older → ✗ Not supported
Screenshot placeholder: Settings > General > About screen showing the Model field highlighted, with example text reading “iPhone 16 Pro”
Step 2: Check Your iOS Version
Stay on the same Settings > General > About screen. Scroll down and find ‘Software Version.’ Apple Intelligence requires iOS 18.1 or later (not iOS 18.0).
If you see:
- iOS 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, or higher → ✓ Compatible
- iOS 18.0 → You need to update
- iOS 17 or earlier → You need to update
To update: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Your iPhone will show if a newer version is available. Tap “Download and Install” and wait 15–30 minutes depending on your internet speed. Keep your phone plugged in and connected to WiFi during the update.

Step 3: Free Up Storage Space
Still in Settings > General > About, scroll to the top and find ‘Available’ storage. You need at least 7GB free. (This requirement increased in iOS 18.2 when Image Playground and Genmoji features were added.)
To check your available storage:
- The ‘Available’ number is shown near the top of the About screen
- If it says “4GB available” or less, you don’t have enough space yet
Quick ways to free up space:
- Delete large apps you don’t use regularly: Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap an app, tap “Delete App”
- Clear old photos: Open Photos app, go to Recents, swipe left on individual photos or albums, tap Delete (or use “Recently Deleted” to clear batches)
- Offload apps (keep them but remove data): Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap an app, tap “Offload App”
Repeat Step 3 until you see at least 7GB available before moving to Step 4.
Screenshot placeholder: Settings > General > About screen with the Available storage field highlighted, showing an example of “5.2 GB available”; also show the iPhone Storage screen with apps listed by size
Step 4: Enable Apple Intelligence
Once you’ve confirmed compatibility, updated iOS, and freed up storage, enable the feature:
- Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri
- Tap ‘Apple Intelligence’ at the top (you’ll see a description of what it does)
- Tap ‘Join Apple Intelligence Preview’ or toggle on the switch
- Your iPhone will download the necessary components in the background (this may take a few minutes)
- Once complete, you’ll see individual features listed:
- Writing Tools (proofread and rewrite text)
- Image Playground (generate images)
- Image Wand (create images in Notes)
- Genmoji (custom emoji creation)
- Siri improvements (smarter voice assistant)
Toggle on any features you want to use. All of them are optional—you can disable any feature individually if you prefer.

What If You See This Message?
“Apple Intelligence is not available in your region”
This isn’t a device problem—it means your country or language isn’t supported yet (or in mainland China’s case, not officially authorized). As of May 2026, Apple Intelligence is available in: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese.
To fix this:
- Check that your device’s language and Siri language are set to the same supported language (Settings > General > Language & Region, then Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Language)
- If your country isn’t listed, you may need to wait for Apple to expand availability to your region
- If you’re in mainland China, Apple Intelligence is not officially available at this time
