How to Use AirPods Live Translation: Setup Guide for iPhone 16 & Apple Intelligence (2026)
Breaking language barriers in real-time conversations just became simpler. AirPods Live Translation lets you talk naturally with people who speak different languages, with your AirPods handling the translation instantly while keeping everything on your device.
What is AirPods Live Translation?
AirPods Live Translation is Apple’s real-time conversation translation feature that works directly through compatible AirPods when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. When activated, it automatically translates speech in real-time—one person speaks in their language, you hear the translation through your AirPods, and the other speaker hears your response translated into their language. The translation happens entirely on your device using Apple Intelligence processing, meaning no cloud services or third-party apps needed, and your conversations remain completely private.
Current as of: iOS 26 (July 2026)
Why Use This Feature?
- Have real conversations instantly: No opening translation apps or typing phrases. Speak naturally and hear translations in real-time through your AirPods.
- Complete privacy: All translation happens on your device. Apple cannot access, log, or store your conversations.
- Works anywhere: During phone calls, video calls, or face-to-face conversations—the feature adapts to however you’re communicating.
- Removes friction: Both people can use their preferred language without switching back and forth or worrying about accents or pronunciation.
What You Need to Know Before Starting
- Compatible devices only: Live Translation requires AirPods Pro (2nd generation or later), AirPods Max (2nd generation), or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. If you have 1st generation AirPods Pro, original AirPods Max, AirPods 3, or basic AirPods—this feature isn’t available for your device. These older models lack the H2 chip required for on-device translation.
- Apple Intelligence iPhone required: Your iPhone must be Apple Intelligence-enabled: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model. Live Translation requires the computational power of these devices.
- iOS 26 or later: This feature requires iOS 26 (released September 2025). If your iPhone shows iOS 25 or earlier, update to iOS 26 first.
- Regional restrictions apply: Live Translation is not available if you’re in mainland China or have an Apple Account registered to an EU country (though EU availability expanded in November 2025 with certain limitations). The feature is fully available in the United Kingdom and most other countries outside the EU and China mainland.
How to Enable AirPods Live Translation — Step by Step
Step 1: Verify Your AirPods Model
Open Settings on your iPhone → Bluetooth → Find your AirPods in the list → Tap the info icon (ⓘ) next to your AirPods name.
Confirm you see one of these:
- “AirPods Pro (2nd generation)” ✓
- “AirPods Max (2nd generation)” ✓
- “AirPods 4” with “Active Noise Cancellation” enabled ✓
If you see “AirPods Pro (1st generation),” “AirPods 3,” or “AirPods Max” without a generation number (original model), Live Translation is not available for your device. You’ll need to upgrade to a compatible model.
Step 2: Confirm iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence
Go to Settings → General → About. Look at the “Software Version” field.
- If it shows “26.x” or higher: ✓ You’re ready. Skip to Step 3.
- If it shows “25” or earlier: You need to update. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest version.
While you’re in the About screen, also scroll down and confirm “Apple Intelligence” appears in the feature list. If it doesn’t appear, your iPhone model doesn’t support Apple Intelligence—Live Translation requires this feature.
Step 3: Enable Live Translation in AirPods Settings
Go to Settings → Bluetooth → Find your AirPods → Tap the info icon (ⓘ) → Scroll down and tap “Translation.”
Toggle the switch next to “Live Translation” to turn it on (switch will turn green when enabled).
Step 4: Select Your Language Pairs
On the same Translation settings screen, tap “Languages.” You’ll see two dropdowns:
- Your Language (the language you speak)
- Target Language (the language you want to hear translations in)
Currently available languages:
- English (UK and US)
- French (France)
- German (Germany)
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish (Spain)
Choose your combination. For example:
- English → Spanish
- French → English
- German → Portuguese
Note: By end of 2026, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Mandarin simplified and traditional) will be added. Coming soon languages appear in the list but are not yet selectable.
Step 5: Start Your First Translated Conversation
Connect your AirPods to your iPhone and make a call or start a conversation with someone who speaks a different language.
For phone calls: During an active call, look for the “Live Translation” button in the Phone app (usually appears near the call controls). Tap it to activate translation.
For face-to-face conversations: Ask Siri: “Start live translation” while wearing your AirPods.
Alternatively, ask the other person to put their phone on speaker mode or open the Phone app, and you both can use Live Translation if they also have a compatible setup.
Step 6: Verify Translation is Working
Once activated:
- You’ll hear a confirmation tone through your AirPods (single beep)
- The Live Translation button will show it’s active (usually highlighted or displaying a checkmark)
- Speak naturally in your language—avoid pausing or over-explaining; the system works best with natural speech rhythms
- You’ll hear the translated text through your AirPods in real-time
- Your spoken response (translated) plays through your iPhone’s speaker so the other person hears it in their language
If translation doesn’t activate:
- Confirm the other person has a compatible Apple device, or ask them to switch to speaker mode so your translation plays aloud
- Verify “Live Translation” is still enabled in AirPods settings (sometimes toggles off after iOS updates)
- Restart Live Translation by tapping the button again or saying “Stop live translation” to Siri, then starting over
- Check that you’re not in an EU region with an EU Apple Account (this may block the feature even if you’re traveling)
AirPods Live Translation removes one of technology’s last barriers—language. With the right device and iOS version, real-time conversations across languages happen naturally, right through your AirPods. If your device doesn’t meet the requirements yet, the feature is expanding to more language pairs by end of 2026, making it worth revisiting as these capabilities grow.
